Meet Joyce Byrnes
How Did You Become An Artist?
Growing up, I was always drawing and painting. I’m so grateful my parents encouraged me and enrolled me in an art class after school. I studied drawing, pastels and acrylic painting. I LOVED IT and attended until I went away to college. I decided not to major in art (I earned a degree in Mathematics), but was able to fit some oil painting classes into my schedule. I then worked for many years as a benefit consultant and, unfortunately, had little opportunity to pursue art. Raising my kids reminded me how much fun creative pursuits are and rekindled my 
passion for art. I’m so happy that, for the past 10 years, I’ve been able to devote more time to my art!
What Kind Of Art Do You Make?
When I got back into making art consistently, I concentrated on 
pastel painting. Soft pastels were always my favorite medium and I’m enjoying learning new techniques and exploring what I can do with them. I love that they are so portable and easy to use when painting en plein air.
What’s Your Muse?
I am deeply inspired by the beauty in the natural world. I strive to capture and convey that beauty in my landscapes and seascapes. Spending time outside, observing nature rejuvenates me and helps put everyday concerns in perspective. I find much of my inspiration in nature while I’m hiking, skiing or sailing.
What’s Next?
My art is constantly evolving, so I hope to continue working and improving. I enjoy being a member of the Nyack Art Collective and plan to continue participating in solo and group shows in Nyack. I’m excited to have been selected The Hopper House Artist of the Month for December 2015, and I’m working on some new pieces for that exhibit!
