Spring? Bring It On. It’s Garden Time.

New_Community_GardenSpring must be right around the corner, because its time to mail in your 2015 application for the Nyack Community Garden.

Each year local residents tend 52 plots in the cooperative garden on South Franklin Street and Depew Avenue. Tools, soil and water are provided by Nyack Community Gardens and plot-keepers supply their own plants and seeds. The land is courtesy of the Robert Martin Company.

Organizers estimate that a full plot (8’ x 20’) can generate enough herbs and vegetables for a family of four from April to November with some produce leftover to share. As a cooperative, plot-keepers are also expected to sign up for communal work. Beginners are welcome. The fee for a half plot is $15 and $20 for a full plot. Newcomers should expect to receive either a half plot or a spot on the waiting list. The number of plots are limited so apply early.

The site, located on Franklin Street between Depew and Hudson Aves, was once the terminus of the railroad that connected Nyack to New York City via Hoboken. The property has been tilled as a community garden since 1976.

To receive an applications send an email to nyackcommunitygarden@gmail.com. Snails aren’t welcome, but snail mail is still ok: sign-seal-and-deliver your application to PO Box 864 Nyack NY 10960. For further information contact Jack Dunnigan at Pickwick at (845) 358-9126.
