Why I Love Seniors

by Jean LaBosco

MealsOnWheels201503I love seniors. There – I said it. It’s not because I am the Director of Senior Centers for Meals on Wheels of Rockland. It’s not because we have the best seniors in our senior centers (although that is true!). It’s not even because I will BE a senior in a few short years! It’s because, like I tell my kids, “sometimes you don’t know what you don’t know.” This always rings true for me when I chat with a senior in one of our senior centers. Our seniors have a lot of life experiences – some fantastic, some difficult, some happy and some sad. Through it all, seniors persevere and those experiences make them the interesting, smart people that they are. When I speak with them, I am always humbled and think – “Jean – you don’t know what you don’t know”.

Are you a senior that lives in the Nyack area? Let me tell you about the best kept secret in Nyack – the Meals on Wheels Nyack Senior Center. If you are 60+ years of age and a Rockland county resident you can join the Nyack Senior Center. We are open Monday through Friday 9a-3p. Don’t have a way of getting there? No problem – we can send a van to pick you up and bring you home at the end of the day. Looking for other seniors to socialize with? Our seniors enjoy guest speakers, local trips, games, holiday parties, bingo and entertainment. Best of all – we serve a hot, nutritious, delicious lunch each day. Don’t eat by yourself – come join us!

Just when you think it can’t get any better – starting in April, 2015 – Bardonia Physical Therapy will be coming to the Nyack Senior Center once a week to provide physical therapy to any senior who has difficulty moving, is concerned about their balance or falling, wants to improve their quality of life and/or wants to preserve their independence. And who doesn’t want to do that?! There is no out-of-pocket cost for this service and you will not have to worry about getting to a doctor’s office – they come to us!

If you are interested in joining us (and I hope you are!) please call the Nyack Senior Center at 845-353-1311 and speak to a member of our caring, friendly staff to get more information. If you are a Rockland senior who is reading this article and you do not live in the Nyack area – do not despair! We have four other senior centers in the county. Please call me at 845-624-6325 and I will be happy to speak with you about a center near your home.

Jean LaBosco is the Director of Senior Centers for Meals on Wheels of Rockland.
