This week, the Nyack Library switches into the Thanksgiving gear. The library has reduced hours on Wednesday and is closed on Thursday.
[info]Did you know that every year the Canadians beat us to Thanksgiving? While we celebrate our day of thanks on the last Thursday in November, our northern neighbors celebrate their day on the second Monday in October.
Our Thanksgiving Day has its origins in the combination of survival with the tradition of hospitality in Native American culture. The Canadian Thanksgiving Day originated with Englishman Martin Frobisher’s voyage across an ice and storm-laden northern Atlantic passage and his expedition’s gratitude for a safe arrival on Baffin Island. Whatever the origin of the celebration, we are all still gathering hundreds of years later to express gratitude for the gifts of the harvest and for good company and family togetherness. Stop by the Nyack Library to research a recipe or two for your Thanksgiving table![/info]
