Where Do Documentaries Come From?

What’s the process of turning something you published into something people will see at the movies? Local author Greg Mitchell will talk about his experience turning his printed words into film documentaries on Thurs June 12 at 7p in the Community Meeting Room of the Nyack Library. “Food for Thought: The Documentary and its Creation” is presented by Rivertown Film and The Nyack Library.

Mitchell will discuss the process by which many of his books, research, and writings have inspired films. He will also detail the challenges that writers, film directors and producers face when they try to move stories from the printed page to the silver screen.

A 25 year Nyack area resident, Mitchell has had a varied career with film documentaries and as well as a Hollywood feature.  “I was chief adviser for one episode in the acclaimed PBS series “The Great Depression,” based on my book “The Campaign of the Century,” about Upton Sinclair’s uproarious race for governor of California in 1934 and chief consultant for the award-winning documentary ‘Original Child Bomb,’  inspired by my writings on the suppression of historic film footage from Hiroshima.

He will also talk about the time that Tom Hanks and then Greg Kinnear were picked to play him in a memoir about coaching Mitchell’s son in the Nyack Little League. “Although two scripts were written that radically changed my life and the story,” Mitchell says that unfortunately nothing was ever produced.  His latest documentary credit is as a co-producer of  “Following the Ninth,” a documentary about Beethoven’s Ninth, which has received great acclaim across the country as well as a sold out screening and flash mob earlier this year in the Nyack Center.
