Grab Your Green Gear: A Guide to Earth Day

Tree art by Bill Batson revisedHave no fear, winter weary neighbors, Earth Day is here. It’s time to grab your green gear and celebrate the planet. Here is a guide to a number of fun, educational, earth-wise events in the upcoming weeks, including lectures, films, clean ups and flea markets.

Sparkill Creek Watershed Alliance Fundraiser

The Rockland Youth Environmental Society invites you to screen ‘Tapped,”  a documentary which examines the role of the bottled water industry and its effects on our health, climate change, pollution, and our reliance on oil.  There will be a discussion following the film. This event is free and sponsored by the Nyack Library Teen Room.

ROSA (Ramapo Organized for Sustainability and a Safe Aquifer) and the Rockland Water Coalition present a program of story telling. In addition to the Wild & Scenic Film Festival, the evening includes the Spring into Rockland  silent action that will continue online at the Rockland Water Coalition through May 6.

Auction items include:

  • an airplane ride over Rockland
  • an outing on the Hudson River in the Riverkeeper boat
  • kayaking on a Rockland waterway
  • a two-hour nature/art workshop for up to six people at Strawtown Studio on historic South Mountain Road
  • a rare 45-rpm recording by Dave Van Ronk, whose memoir sparked the movie “Inside Llewyn Davis”
  • a Longaberger picnic basket
  • consultation on building a tree house
  • a massage
  • private meditation lessons

The program includes 12 short films making it acceptable to come late or leave early if necessary, but you will want to try to come for the entire showing. The showing benefits local community environmental charitable and activist organizations.

Keep Rockland Beautiful
Nyack Community Cleanup
April 26 9a-noon/Rain-date: April 27 9a-noon

Help remove tons of litter from village streets, parks and waterways as part of the “Great American Cleanup Campaign.” Volunteers will meet up at the Nyack Center (corner of Broadway and Depew) before 9a, to pick up supplies, enjoy refreshments and exchange ideas with neighbors before heading out to chosen sites from 9am-11am. Find KiRBy, the Cleanup Gnome (He’ll be hiding in littered sites), and win a prize. Students earn community service credits for every hour they roll up their sleeves. Afterwards, tools will be returned to Nyack’s Memorial Park for village Earth Day festivities, noon to 5pm. Share cleanup stories and achievements and then join in the fun: live music, craft projects, educational exhibits and games. Info: 845.708.9164.

Nyack’s Earth Day Committee will sponsor live music, a clothing swap, environmental demonstrations, arts, crafts, food and fun—all to save the earth and to raise funds for the Nyack Skate Park. This year will feature craft projects, local artisans, live music, educational exhibits, trade tables, giveaways and food vendors. Admission to the event is free.
