For one night, civic decisions and courtroom deliberations will yield to the realm of art and culture at Nyack’s Village Hall. The Nyack Art Collective kicks off March’s First Friday festival with a birthday celebration for Nyack’s Mayor Jen Laird White. A special surprise will be unveiled in between 5 and 6p, so you are urged to arrive early at 9 North Broadway.
Later that evening, The Edward Hopper Arts Center has a full-house of exhibitions and a screening that offer a glimpse into the past and present local art scene:
- “Painters and Paintings of Rockland County, NY-The Hopper Years,” curated by Mark Waller, samples the work of the artists that called Nyack home a century ago. The visual journey assembles notable artists who helped form the ‘cradle of moderism’ in Rockland County including Jacob Getlar Smith, the artist who created the mural in the Nyack Post Office.
- Bill Batson’s Hopper inspired exhibit “Hopper Country” is on display in the hallway gallery.
- March member artist of the month, Maxine Nodel is on exhibit.
- The Jean-Pierre Devillers documentary “Edward Hopper and the Blank Canvas” will be screened
