Historical Society Cooks Up Kitchen Exhibit

The winter season, with its cold nights and holidays, is a great time to take a nostalgic step back in time and visit “Great Grandma’s Kitchen“, courtesy of the Historical Society of the Nyacks.

The new exhibit, opening on Saturday, December 7 from 1-4p  at the Historical Society of he Nyacks’ Museum features an array of antique implements from a typical 19th century home. Cast iron cookware,  enamel pots on an old stove; tinware shakers, rolling pin, yellowware mixing bowl and cookie cutters on the kitchen table; aprons on a hook, collections of bottle openers, mezzalunas and hand cranked appliances, are just a few of the items that may remind you of childhood visits to the home of a beloved elderly relative or give younger folks a glimpse of some of the joys and hardships of life a few generations back.

Subtitled “Household Implements from Long Ago,” the exhibit also includes evocative treasures from the rest of the home as well, such as a dining table set for two, a display of lamps and candlesticks, and a few children’s toys. The items exhibited are all drawn from the collections of Trustees and members of the Historical Society plus a friend or two. The dining/living room will be arranged around the original coal-fired parlor stove that is a permanent part of the nineteenth-century building housing the exhibit.

Great Grandma’s Kitchen: Household Implements of Long Ago will be open to the public from 1 to 4p every Saturday beginning with an opening reception on December 7 and running through December, January and February, at the Historical Society of the Nyacks museum, Suite L-2 of the Depew House, 50 Piermont Avenue, Nyack.  It may be seen at other times by appointment.
