How Jazz Blossomed in Hopper’s Garden

by Ray Wright

Over 30 years ago, I became a director of the Edward Hopper House Art Center.  As a life long fan of music, especially jazz, I suggested that we have concerts in the garden.

I asked Bert Hughes to work with me as co-chair.  He was a musician and the director of music at Nyack High school. Bert selected and scheduled the musicians and I raised money.  Bill Sayles did the brochures and flyers.  Everyone else pitched in distributing the flyers and working on the day of the concert.

I sent personal letters to all the surrounding neighbors to win their approval for the outdoor evening concert series. Our first concert was the Nyack High School Jazz Band. Bob Lewis and The Nyack Rotary helped fix up the backyard and also contributed some brick work that is still there today.
