Camera Trained On The Tracks

by Ray Wright

A visit to a train maintenance parking lot at Jones Point in search of eagles flying over the Hudson River created a unexpected opportunity to photograph freight trains barreling down the tracks. When I heard the train coming, I know it had “train art” written all over it so I set my camera for 1/500th of a second and panned as the train passed by me on its way south.

I couldn’t believe how many cars were attached to the engine.  There are good train watching spots in Congers, Haverstraw, West Haverstraw and Jones Point.

The West Shore Line, now a CSX Freight line, passes through Orangeburg, Blauvelt, West Nyack, Valley Cottage and Congers. It dates back to the 1860’s with different owners and names including the New York, West Shore and Buffalo Railway and the New York Central Railroad. In 1976 the line was merged into Conrail before joining CSX in 1999 (Source: Wikipedia).

Lewis Bogaty’s Website includes more train photography and history which documents the CSX West Shore line as it winds its way north from the New Jersey Border to Haverstraw, Stony Point and beyond.
