Nyack, Feb 25 — Nyack Schools will receive $61,000 in outside awards to support its music, science and math programs.
The schools’ music programs will receive $1,000 in cash and $10,000 in new instruments after receiving more votes than 15 other schools in the NEMC (National Educational Music Company) “Music Is Life” contest. Music Department Chairperson and Orchestra Director Christine Gero will select either a marching band, concert band or orchestra package of new instruments worth $10,000. “Yes, it is thrilling to win this package, but what is truly wonderful is how everyone came together to do something extraordinary for our students,” said Gero. The award will support Nyack Schools’ scholarship program which provides instruments to students who can not afford to rent their own.
The “Music Is Life” contest was sponsored by NEMC, a 50-year old music instrument rental company that supports independent music retailers across the country. “We are thrilled to offer our instrument prize package to Christine Gero and the Nyack Schools, said NEMC President David Benedetto. “Supporting music education is a fundamental value that we have as a company and sponsoring our ‘Music is Life’ contest is a great way to demonstrate this. Besides, we received some wonderful entries from some very talented young musicians.”
Inspire Nyack announced a $50,000 gift to enrich the science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs in Nyack Schools. The $250,000 contributed to the school district’s science programs over the last five years has helped improve math and science skills and enabled Nyack to implement a Robotics curriculum in grades K-5.
