Memorial Park Playground Repairs

by Mayor Jen White

Many parents of young children are writing or calling to ask about the playground in Memorial Park. During a routine inspection it was determined that several playground equipment pieces were not only substandard but were, in fact, dangerous.  The Village did the only responsible thing it could do and removed them immediately.

This was an unexpected and un-budgeted turn of events.  Municipal playground equipment is very expensive with larger pieces ranging in price from $20,000 to more than $50,000.  We are utilizing money from our contingency fund to replace the swings and two smaller pieces.  They were ordered within twenty four hours of the removal of the other pieces and we are hoping for delivery any day now.

The playground was built through the efforts of Friends of the Nyacks and several generous large donors.  I have had several people offer to undertake a fundraising effort for the additional equipment.  If you are interested in participating in this, please, email me at jenwhite@nyack-ny.gov and I can put you in touch with the other families who are interested in helping.

As a Mom who logged many hours on that playground when my kids were small, I know how frustrating this must be.  We are working as quickly as we can to get the playground back into a safe condition so that our youngest citizens can continue to enjoy this terrific Village amenity.

Thank you for your understanding and patience.

Nyack, May 19 — The bathrooms at Memorial Park will be closed for a few days to repair the pumps in the system.   Temporary bathrooms will be installed for public use during the repairs.
