More Desal Eval Time, Says Rock Co Legislature

The Rockland County Legislature has voted unanimously to ask the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to extend the the public comment period for United Water’s proposed Haverstraw Desalination plant. Legislators also asked the DEC to hold multiple public hearings and requested United Water to pay for an independent expert review of the proposal.

‘€œGiven the complexity of this project, it’s impossible for members of the public to conduct their own independent analysis of the DEIS in the time allotted,’€ said Rockland County Legislator Alden H. Wolfe. ‘€œUnited Water should also commit funding to allow the public to review its data and comment appropriately,’€ said Wolfe, who serves as the Vice Chairman of the Rockland County Legislature and Chairman of the Legislature’s Environmental Committee.

The only public hearing currently scheduled will take place in two sessions on March 6 at Haverstraw Town Hall.  April 20 is the deadline for written comments.

The Rockland Water Coalition is hosting a public information forum about United Water’s proposed Haverstraw desalination project on Thurs Feb 23 at Clarkstown Town Hall.
