2011 Closing Statements: Sheriff, Family Court Judge

NyackNewsAndViews offered more than twenty candidates on the ballot in Nyack the opportunity to submit a “closing statement” for voters before the Tuesday Nov 8 General Election.

Here are statements from the candidates for Rockland County Sheriff and Family Court Judge. Candidates are listed in random order.

  • Family Court Judge: Paul Chiaramonte (R), Karen Riley (Working Families),  Sherri Eisenpress (D)
  • Sheriff: Louis Falco (D), Matthew Brennan (R),  Tim O’Neill (Working Families, Conservative)

Family Court Judge

Sherri Eisenpress: Thanks to your support in the primary, I am today the Democratic and Independence Party nominee for Rockland County Family Court Judge. My professional and personal experience makes me uniquely suited to serve the diverse families and children that come before the Court in what is likely to be a time of great stress. Not only am I adoptee myself and an adoptive parent, but I am also an attorney with over 20 years’ experience both litigating and mediating complex family law disputes. I was an Adjunct Professor of Law for more than fifteen years and a judicial law clerk for a Federal District Court Judge.

In my law practice, I’ve successfully argued many cutting edge family law cases and represented victims of domestic violence on a pro bono basis.  Today, I serve as Chair of the Board of the Directors of New York Youth at Risk, an organization that mentors teens and young adult in the foster care and juvenile justice system, working to ensure that kids at risk today aren’t adults in trouble tomorrow. I was also a founding board member of a not-for-profit school. While at NYU, I started the school’s first chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

I am a strong advocate of alternative dispute resolution in family court cases because, when possible, families should make decision about their children, not Judges. But, when tough decisions need to be made, my experience as a mediator, arbitrator and litigator along with my work with children will allow me to decide the cases that come before me fairly and with the best interests of the children in mind.
This Election Day, I’m looking to bring my passion and dedication for work with children and families to the Rockland Family Court. I humbly ask for your vote.

Sheriff

Louis Falco: I’d like to say to the people of Rockland County that I am a career Law Enforcement professional, I have gained leadership through experience, I am not a politician. I have been working 33 years in the Sheriff’s Department preparing for this great opportunity. I will continue to serve all of the people of Rockland County with integrity and fairness without judgment of race, nationality or creed. I will not hold a grudge or criticize anyone who has not supported me. I firmly believe that a Sheriff must be fair and impartial while enforcing the law. I will work to unite communities, not divide communities.

I am honored to be supported by so many people in Rockland County, Sheriff’s Kralik and Sheriff Goldrick, and endorsed by so many police and labor organizations that have recognized my professionalism and dedication to public safety.

I will continue to work with local law enforcement on initiatives such as operation medicine cabinet, taking prescription drugs off our streets. Silver Alert, protecting at risk adults, and Offender Watch, the sex offender registry. These joint initiatives are keeping our children and our communities safe.
In my tenure as Chief of the Patrol, I have lowered costs, consolidated units to provide the same level of public safety, doing more with less. I will continue to look for alternative revenue sources such as grants and asset forfeiture revenue to help the Sheriff’s Office and local law enforcement agencies offset the cost of policing and public safety.

I have said from the beginning of this campaign that first and foremost, Public Safety is the main focus of the Sheriff’s Office. I will continue to work side by side with all local law enforcement in our diverse communities, and will continue our anti terrorism initiatives. I will work diligently, always being fiscally responsible, and budget minded while protecting Rockland’s law abiding citizens.
