Rock Co Rowers Power To Nationals

by Peter Klose

Five Rockland County students will go to Cincinnati next month to compete in the national championships after taking home medals in Saratoga at the NYS High School Rowing Championships on May 8-9. The 12 boat team of Clarkstown and Nyack High School athletes was sponsored by Nyack’s River Rowing Association.

The fastest double scull team in the state calls Clarkstown home. Seniors Doug Woolly and Ryan O’Connor won the senior double category with the boys junior quadruple of James Cronin, Sam Bangs, David Foster, and Luke Warren taking third in their heat. In the men’s lightweight double category, Stephen St.Denis and Jeremy Kleiman placed third. The women’s senior quadruple of Kiera Foti, Rebeca Linhart Maggie Hylas and Caroline Baratz finished fifth.

Nyack’s River Rowing Association provides rowing programs for all age groups. The RRA recently teamed with the Village of Nyack to win a NYS grant to install a dock for human powered, non-motorized vessels and repair the sea wall in the Nyack marina. Summer rowing camps at the Rockland County YMCA in Nyack and the Nyack Center form the backbone of the community rowing association outreach effort.

Peter Klose is Director of the Nyack-based River Rowing Association.
