Voters Pass Nyack School Budget, Reserve Fund

Nyack, May 18 — Nyack School District voters passed the proposed 2010-11 budget and authorized the district to set up a reserve fund for future capital expenditures.

Voters re-elected incumbent Michael Mark to another term as a school trustee. Newcomer Dan Juechter was also elected to the board and was the top vote getter in the four way contest. He will replace current board president Amy Applebaum who will step down at the end of her term.

Only 14 percent of the registered voters turned out on a rainy election day. In 2009, when two board candidates ran unopposed, voter turnout was only eight percent.

Dan Juechter (60% of votes cast) and Michael Mark (58%) were elected to the Nyack Board of Education. Although these totals include absentee ballots, they are considered preliminary counts because they do not include “challenges,” or ballots cast by voters whose names were not found on voting rolls on election day.

With almost 64 percent voting Yes, the 2010-11 school budget passed 1344 to 771. A second ballot question, authorizing the district to create a capital reserve fund to carry over unspent operating funds from year to year, was ok’d by 65 percent of the voters, 1261 to 690.
