Appearing to be white, Ben Nightingale was adopted in the 1930s by an African-American silent film star. A 1986 New York Times interview with Mr. Nightingale says he is ‘€œa black man who looks white and a Jew who grew up as a member of Philadelphia’s First African Baptist Church. Ben Nightingale has a fascinating story to tell’€”and to sing.’€
Written and performed by Ben Nightingale, the one man show presents a series of dramatic’€”and sometimes comic’€”reminiscences. Mr. Nightingale depicts his journey of self-discovery to determine his race, the identity of his birth parents, and his legal battle to unseal his records in court. In doing so, he will present some stark realities about race and adoption.
