On Dec. 10, at 152 Main Street in Nyack, Winter Wednesday Flowers opened its doors and customers caught their first glimpse of a unique flower shop. Selling exquisite fresh blooms ‘€“ including exotic, hybrid roses shipped directly from Ecuadorian farms ‘€“ as well as high-end, custom designed artificials, we at Winter Wednesday consider ourselves extremely fortunate to be part of a village with such a robust community sensibility and long-standing artistic spirit.
Located in the space that formerly housed the Something Unexpected, it was my goal ‘€“ along with my partners Diego Astudillo and Maria Elena Astudillo ‘€“ to offer Nyack residents beautiful and inspired flowers in an environment that is aesthetically pleasing, full of life and welcoming. Our vision was something along the lines of growing grandma’s peony and hyacinth garden smack dab in the middle of a Soho gallery!
To that end, because we have exceptional wall-space and gallery lighting in our Main Street shop, we feel that we are in a wonderful position to support and showcase local artists (established or budding!) by hanging their work. A perfect cymbidium orchid or circus rose in full bloom is a work of art in and of itself’€¦and yet’€¦we believe that their inherent beauty will only be enhanced when sharing the space with a spectacular photograph or dramatic still-life drawing. We would also love to partner with playwrights and poets – opening our space from time to time ‘€œsalon style ‘€œ’€“ in celebration of not only fine art, but the spoken word as well. As Diego, who in his 20 years as a designer has created arrangements and tablescapes for celebrity clientele and directed floral and botanical installations for corporate and culinary entities will tell you, ‘€œWorking with flowers isn’t work ‘€“ it’s life! When you love what you do, your heart and mind are always in the right place.’€ This clarity of vision infuses everything we do, whether creating a lush centerpiece, selecting a stunning single stem, or orchestrating the floral design for a dinner party or special event…
For Winter Wednesday Flowers, being in Nyack feels very ‘€œmeant to be.’€ We love it here, and with tremendous excitement, we look forward to growing within our community, while championing Nyack’s vibrancy and that which makes it such an unique place to live and work.
