As Others See Us: David Clayton-Thomas

David Clayton-Thomas, the front man for the 1970’s rock’n brass band Blood Sweat & Tears, fell in love with a car. But as the expression goes — if you love something let it go…if it was meant to be, it will show up some day in a car show room…in Nyack?

The famous car in question is an Audi A8 Sport luxury sedan which Clayton-Thomas first purchased in 2001. He told the Toronto Globe and Mail it was love at first drive.

‘€œWhen I moved to Toronto in the late seventies I sold the car to Steve McQueen, the actor. I paid $5,000 for the car, I put $8,000 into the restoration and I sold it for $35,000 five years later.’€

‘€œIn 2001, I found the car again. It was in a place called Classic Autos in Nyack, N.Y. I was driving by and I had to stop. I thought, ‘€˜Could that possibly be?’

‘€œI went in and looked and there were a few signature marks in the restoration that identified it as my car. They wanted $350,000 for it!’€

David Clayton-Thomas and BS&T have sold more than 40 million albums worldwide with three gold singles and five Grammies to their credit. In 1996, he was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. In 2004, he left BS&T for the second time. He now heads up a 10-piece band that will perform with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra next month.
