Memorial Park Plan Approved

Nyack Village Hall SignBy Doug Foster

It was the last meeting of the current Village Board, and they ended with with perhaps the most productive meeting in its history.

In two, 5-0 votes the Board enacted both a new zoning ordinance and a new waterfront park plan, the result of thousands of hours of work by many dedicated residents.

There was a sense of relief and joy when each resolution passed unanimously.  Trustee Marie Lorenzini had the opportunity to make the motion to pass the ordinance which she spent so much time working on with an incredibly dedicated committee.  Steve Knowlton, chair of the committee, said “the big thing is that the comprehensive master plan process is complete.”

The new zoning code will take effect upon some minor changes to be completed by the Village Attorney and its filing with the secretary of state.

Not all items were as large as zoning and parks.  The Board approved a Hula hoop festival scheduled for May 8, 2010 in Memorial Park.  The festival will include contests and Hula Hooping to live music.

The Nyack Center asked for $18,700 for short term financing to get more kids in their programs, which have a waiting list.  The Village gave $296,400 in 2009, slightly less than the $298,300 in 2008. The Board didn’t act on the request but said they would look for alternate sources.  The request comes on the heals of a shooting on Depew Ave on Tuesday, Dec. 8.

It was the last meeting for the current board.  The Mayor closed the meeting thanking fellow board members and staff.
