Can you hear me now? Good! That will soon cost you another $14 a year as Rockland County considers a new tax on cell phones.
Each year more and more people “cut the cord” and switch from land lines to cell phones decreasing the revenue state and local governments get from POTS (plain old telephone service) taxes. Rockland County Executive Scott Vanderhoef has proposed a new tax 30 cent tax on each cell phone line per month to create $400,000 to help cover about half of the cost of the county’s 911 service.
A typical family plan with four cell phones would cost .30 per line per month or $14.40 a year.
There’s a public hearing on Sept. 16 in the Allison-Parris County Office Building in New City at 7p to discuss the proposed legislation.
