Village residents have ample opportunity, in the form of six public meetings, to be part of Nyack’s budget process. This year is going to be exceptionally difficult, given significant revenue decreases.
The Village is facing up to a $500,000 budget deficit, which is a huge amount considering that the total budget is a little more than $6 million. The Village has few choices to increase revenues: borrow more for capital expenses, raise property taxes or raise parking fees. Suggestions have been made for some painful cuts, like the Nyack Center.
In the Mayor’s budget is a 10% cut in salaries for the Mayor and Trustees. Given their meager earnings, that should total only about $5,000, but it is a symbolic gesture and every little bit helps.
