Do The People Have A Right to Paper and Plastic?

by Connie Coker, Rockland County Legislator

The Environmental Committee of the Rockland County Legislature is to be held Wednesday evening Dec. 10th at 7:30 in the Legislature on New Hempsted Rd – near corner of Main in New City – County Office Building (View Flyer).

I am the Chairwoman of the Environmental Committee and I am sponsoring a public discussion to review ways to promote the use of reusable shopping bags and decrease free plastic/paper bags.  I encourage people to attend and express their views on how to decrease the problems associated with the manufacture and disposal of plastic/paper bags.

I also encourage people to listen to the local radio station WRCR 1300 AM (7am until 10am)  where the morning hosts Steve and Sofia are  criticizing me for the proposal to eliminate free plastic/paper bags.
It is very disturbing what they are saying about the motives of those of us who are extremely concerned about the effects on the environment of these bags.  Steve and Sofia have determined that shoppers should have the right to free plastic bags and that any effort to interfere  with that is ridiculous and unimportant.   The phone number is  624-1300 if anyone is willing to listen and call in.

Another way to show support or for more information is to call Christopher Smith in the Legislature at 845-638-5754.
