The Quilt Comes To RCC

All together it’s 54 tons, has 40,000 panels and includes 91,000 names. And part of it is coming to RCC in October. The AIDS Memorial Quilt will be shown at Rockland Community College from 10/22-24.

The AIDS Memorial Quilt is the largest piece of ongoing community art in the world. RCC will display 1,600 panels of the AIDS Quilt including those from Arthur Ashe, Perry Ellis, Ricky Wilson, Ryan White and Pedro Zamora. Volunteers are needed to read, greet and setup for this event. The public is invited to volunteer to help with the event by helping to set up on 10/21 and 10/22 and being a greeter, name reader or Quilt monitor throughout the three-day display

The goal of the quilt is to provide a creative means for remembrance and healing, to effectively illustrate the enormity of the AIDS pandemic, to increase awareness of HIV and AIDS throughout the general public and to assist others in providing education on the prevention of HIV infection. To date, more than 17 million people have seen The AIDS Memorial Quilt.

The AIDS Memorial Quilt display is being sponsored by Rockland Community College and Together Our Unity Can Heal (TOUCH). Volunteers are being coordinated by Rockland County AmeriCorps, a program of the Rockland County Youth Bureau.

For more information or to request a volunteer application, please contact the AmeriCorps program at 845-708-7307 or e-mail your request to rcamericorps@co.rockland.ny.us.
