Maternal Immunizations

Quratulain Zeeshan, MD, is the Regional Medical Director of Women’s Health at Sun River Health.

As you may know, there is a lot of different information on immunizations (vaccines) out there. Unfortunately, vaccine misinformation is leading some people to not get vaccinated, putting themselves and their pregnancies at risk.

In this article, we are going to focus on which vaccines you should get if you are pregnant so you will have the information you need to keep yourself and your pregnancy safe.

If I am pregnant, which vaccines should I get?

Anyone who is pregnant should get the Tdap (tetanus toxoid, diphtheria toxoid, and acellular pertussis) vaccine when they are 27 to 36 weeks pregnant.

If you are pregnant during the fall and winter, it is recommended that you get your annual flu and COVID-19 vaccines.

Certain pregnant individuals should also get the RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) vaccine between September 1 and March 31. Your doctor can tell you if it is recommended that you get this vaccine.

Other vaccines may also be recommended during pregnancy, depending on your age, previous immunizations, comorbidities, and disease risk factors.

How do we know these vaccines are safe to get during pregnancy?

More studies every year show that these vaccines are perfectly safe and will help you have a healthier pregnancy with less risks of getting a preventable illness.

What you need to know:

Vaccines are the safest and best way to protect yourself and your pregnancy from many preventable diseases. Everyone, including pregnant individuals, should get all the vaccines their doctor recommends at the appropriate times. It is always ok to ask your doctor questions about vaccines to make sure you are getting the best care for yourself and your pregnancy.

You can always make an appointment to get your recommended vaccines at Sun River Health. To find a location near you, visit sunriver.org.
