Storm Leaves 150 Rockland Homes Powerless

Rockland County, Oct 1 8:45a — O&R reports that about 150 Rockland County homes are without power as the remnants of a tropical storm bashes the metropolitan area today. The National Weather Service has declared a Flood Watch in effect until noon today. Rainfall totals of 1 1/2 to 2 inches are likely across the tri-state area this morning with locally higher amounts possible.

About 14,000 O&R customers have suffered service interruptions during the storm. About 400 homes in Orange County and 200 in Bergen are also without service. Utility crews worked through the night and today to estore electric service interruptions.

Heavy rain is predicted through this afternoon as low pressure off the Delmarva area will track northeast through the region this morning with the potential for flooding over the area through this afternoon. A strong southerly flow will transport tropical moisture northward ahead of the low resulting in the potential for heavy rain.

The heaviest rain this morning will be mainly west of New York City with this axis shifting to the east after daybreak this morning. This will result in sharp rises of fast responding rivers and streams. In addition, the intense rainfall rates will lead to possible flash flooding especially in urban areas.

A flood watch means there is a potential for flooding based on current forecasts. You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.
