Rockland Residents Join Worldwide Climate Strike: Dec 6

by Emmy Udry, XR Youth Rockland

As communities around the globe feel the effects of the climate crisis and world leaders watch indifferently, it is imperative to take action on the local level.

On Fri Dec 6, millions of students and adult allies all around the globe will be striking for climate justice and to put pressure on world leaders to take immediate action on the climate crisis. At 11a at the Veterans Park Gazebo on Main St in Nyack, hundreds of youth and adults from XR Youth Rockland, 350 NJ/Rockland, RCAN, and the Rockland Sierra Club will turn out for this rally.

Rockland strikers are demanding more representation in local decision-making on climate change because climate justice cannot be achieved without taking the opinions and experiences of everybody who will be affected and who has been affected by the climate crisis into account. Another demand of the strike is a sustainability coordinator for Rockland County, which will coordinate efforts to curb climate change, as well as prepare for its inevitable impacts.

The strike will kick off with sign-making at 11a and a march at 12n immediately followed by a rally, where students, adults, politicians, and congressional candidate Mondaire Jones will speak. The day will wrap up with live music and performances from 2:30-3:30p, by multiple student bands.

This local event will be an intergenerational climate strike in coordination with hundreds of other climate strikes worldwide. Students and adult allies from Rockland County will be striking, not only to show world leaders that they need to take urgent action on the climate crisis, but to show local officials that action on the local level is instrumental to tackling the climate crisis.

The Veterans Park Gazebo is located at 15 Cedar Street at Main Street in Nyack. This event is being coordinated by the Extinction Rebellion Youth Rockland, 350 NJ/Rockland, Rockland Citizens’ Action Network, and the Rockland Sierra Club.

Emmy Udry is the External Coordinator/Actions Coordinator for XR Youth Rockland
