Orangetown Town Clerk Closing Arguments: Robert Tompkins

The Orangetown Town Clerk Election on Tuesday, November 6 features Robert Tompkins (D) running against Rosanna Sfraga (R). Polls are open from 6a to 9p. Visit the Rockland County Board of Elections to learn where to vote.

by Orangetown Town Clerk Candidate Robert Tompkins
I’m Robert Tompkins, running on the Democratic and Women’s Equality ballot lines for a one year unexpired term for Orangetown Town Clerk, Receiver of Taxes. This position collects and distributes over $200 million in property taxes, including for the Village of Nyack, and the Nyack Public Schools. This important Town Hall position acts independently on behalf of the community. It also issues permits, takes minutes, safeguards important documents, opens bids, and certifies contracts. It helps make the Town run more smoothly.
I believe I am the most qualified candidate for this full-time department head position. A Certified Public Accountant with a master’s degree in public administration from Cornell University. I have decades of experience in both the public, private, and non-profit sectors, including as a division manager of a city. I’m an active volunteer in many sectors of our community: I have been a member of the boards of the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rockland County, the Sparkill Creek Watershed Alliance, as well as the Orangetown Housing Authority for five years – they have 96 one bedroom apartments for seniors. There, I helped save more than $3 million in interest expenses after discovering a special clause in their bond covenant allowing refinancing following the Cortwood Village fire—not just a significant accomplishment but the kind of expertise taxpayers could benefit from too. I also serve two committees of the Rockland County Water Resources Management Task Force.
This is not a job, but a calling for me. I enjoy helping people and when I worked for local government, felt connected to the community though service.
Please compare each candidate’s vision, background and experience. You can see mine at TompkinsForClerk.com. I hope to earn your vote this Tuesday November 6.
