Nyack Weekender: Halloween-Kick-Off-Week

With Halloween right around the corner, Rockland is getting spooky. Get your front lawn ready for the House and Lawn Decorating Competition or join the Rockland Boulders for their Halloween-Extravaganza. Enjoy the fall weather during the Oak Hill Cemetery Walking Tour or shop for mums and pumpkins at the Van Houten Farms or for art books and other treasures to benefit a new play by Samuel Harps. Fans of classical music should head to the Union Arts Center for the Opening Gala Classical Music Concert.

Friday

  • Work with a mix of natural, fine arts, and craft materials while being guided by master artists at the Teen Eco-Art Studio. Work with a range of tools and learn about the natural world. Bring a friend, discover, and experiment. For kids ages 12-15. 4-6p, Marydell Faith & Life Center, 640 Midland Ave,Upper Nyack.
  • It’s “Trunk or Treat”-time at the Rockland Boulders Halloween Extravaganza! Decorate the trunk of your car and get into your assigned spot to hand out candy to trick-or-treaters. Have fun in the bounce houses or inflatable haunted maze, decorate a pumpkin, and dance to the music. 5:30-8:30p, JTS Community Center, 115 Torne Valley Rd, Hillburn.
  • Kick-off Halloweek in Nyack by taking part in the first ever House and Lawn Decorating Competition. Get out your scariest decoration and turn your front lawn into a spooky scenery. The public will walk through the village and select the best decorated homes. Get your ballots at 6p at Maura’s Kitchen, 81 S Broadway. The contest is running through October 26.
  • It’s opening night for Kris Campbell’s debut solo exhibition AND OF OUT IN. On display are works inspired by portraits and stories of Nyack area transgender men and women. The opening reception will be held from 7-10p, 95 1/2 Main, 95 1/2 Main St, Nyack.
  • Steve Byrne is known for his roles in The Middle and Four Christmases. Catch him at 7:30 and 9:45p, Levity Live, 4210 Palisades Center Dr. A-401, West Nyack.
  • Maureen’s Jazz Cellar presents the Ted Rosenthal Trio, featuring Noriko Ueda and Tim Horner. 8 and 9:30p, 2 N Broadway, Nyack.

Saturday

Did you know Nelson Mandela was also an actor? When Shades Repertory Theater founder Sam Harps discovered that one of his heroes had a theater background, he wrote Antigone on Robben Island — Mandela Takes the Stage.  Now Sam Harps is trying to bring his tribute to Nelson Mandela to a local stage near you.  You can support that effort at a sale to benefit the production. Art books, jewelry, glassware, antiques and lots of other wonderful things will be available for purchase. 10a-3p, 37 Gesner Ave, South Nyack.   • This week Bike Nyack goes where the Bear Went Over the Mountain, sort of, for a ride to Cold Spring. Meetup at 8:30a at the Jones Point parking area on 9W (aka the “Ramapo-Dunderburg Trailhead”).
  • Learn about Blue Rock School’s unique kindergarten program at the school’s Kindergarten Information Session and Play Day. Your little ones will have fun listening to stories and enjoying homemade snacks while you learn about Blue Rock’s creative learning environment and see the wooden campus. 10a-12p, Blue Rock School, 110 Demarest Mill Rd, West Nyack.
  • EcoArts: A Bird’s Eye View – Join Strawtown artists and educators at the State Line Lookout, and enjoy the cliff-side view. Go on a short nature exploration walk, gather natural materials, and look into the sky to see the birds. Then take part in a nature art project where you get to become the bird in the sky and create your own view down below. 11a-1p, State Line Lookout Scenic View, Palisades Interstate Pkwy, Alpine, NJ.
  • Stop by the Art Sale to Benefit the John Green House. A selection of original artwork by Astrith Deyrup will be for sale in her family home. All proceeds from this fundraiser will go to the revitalization of the John Green House. 11a-5p, Bennett-Deyrup House, 309 N Broadway, Nyack.

  • Join the 37th annual Brinks Memorial Ceremony in remembrance of Nyack Police Officers Sgt. Edward O’Grady and Officer Waverly Brown, and Brinks Security Guard Peter Paigill, who were murdered in a senseless and violent act of domestic terrorism. Celebrate their bravery and mourn their ultimate sacrifice. 4p, Rt 59 (entrance to the NY State Thruway), Nyack.
  • Support your local volunteer fire department at the Jackson Hose Wing Night. Wings, draft beer and a 50/50 raffle are waiting. 5-10p, Jackson Hose Company #3, 45 Catherine St, Nyack.

Sunday

Six hands, two pianos, and three illustrious Russian pianists – Vassily Primakov, Natalia Lavrova and Oxana Mikhailoff – will kick-off this year’s Sparkill Concert Series with an Opening Gala Classical Music Concert. Experience a one-of-a-kind transcription for two pianos of Tchaikovsky’s iconic Symphony No. 6 Pathetiqu and Rachmaninoff’s Suite No. 2. Attend the concert, enjoy a pre-concert reception, and post-concert dinner. Tickets are available online. 3p reception, 3:30p concert, and 6p gala dinner, Union Arts Center, 2 Union St, Sparkill.

  • Step into Maura’s Kitchen for Wizardfest and find yourself in Hogwarts, where a dance party and brunch will be waiting. Get your best costume out and indulge in Harry Potter themed drinks and food. Guests must be 21 years or older. 1-8p, 81 S Broadway, Nyack.
  • Come out to Van Houten Farms for Music in the Garden with music by The Bunker Boys. Enjoy Greek cuisine, local craft beer, and live music as you wander around the farm and shop for pumpkins and mums. 1-5p, Van Houten Farms and Garden Center, 68 Sickletown Rd, Orangeburg.
  • Classical Pianist Mariel Mayz made her debut with the Rockland Symphony Orchestra. She performs in the Young Masters Recital Series. 1:30-3p, Valley Cottage Library, 110 Rt 303, Valley Cottage.
  • Celebrate the lives of “Nyack’s permanent residents” like Edward Hopper, Helen Hayes, Charles MacArthur, and Carson McCullers. The Historical Society of the Nyacks’ Oak Hill Cemetery Walking Tour starts at 2p at the cemetery entrance gate, Route 9W, between Sickles and 5th Ave, Nyack.
  • GraceMusic’s 49th season opens with Sound the Trumpet! All ensemble members play in the U. S. Military Academy Band at West Point. They  will perform an exciting program of works covering the baroque, romantic, and modern genres. 4p, Grace Episcopal Church, 130 First Ave, Nyack.

Wednesday
