The Villages: Presidents Day 2018

  • This week in the villages: It will be a quiet day at village and town halls near Nyack. As Presidents Day is a federal holiday, government offices, banks, post offices, and public schools will be closed. The Tappan Zee Express will run on a weekend schedule on Mon 2/19. In other news: The Village of Upper Nyack wants your input on the comprehensive plan; our local NYS legislators want your input regarding the 2018-2019 New York State budget at a community forum on Wednesday. Lastly: it’s still flu season. Get your FREE flu shot at two locations this week.

Presidents Day Observance Closures
In addition to the village hall office, Nyack’s Department of Public Works will be closed on Monday. Trash will be picked up on Tues Feb 20.
As for transport options: TZx buses will operate on a weekend schedule; Transport of Rockland (TOR) buses 59, 91, 92, 93, 94 and Loop 3 will operate on a Saturday schedule; TOR 95, Loop 1 and Loop 2 will operate on a weekday schedule; there will be no service on TOR 97; and Metro-North will operate on a  Saturday schedule.
Hopper House Named as National Trust for Historic Preservation Member
Edward Hopper House has been accepted into the National Trust for Historic Preservation Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios (HAHS) program. The HAHS program is dedicated to preserving and interpreting the places where art was made in America. “The ability to present Edward Hopper’s formative years through the HAHS lens strengthens the message of our mission and will help guide our future,” said Jennifer Patton, executive director of the Edward Hopper House Museum and Study Center.
Winter 2018 Recreation Programs
Registration is now open for the Winter 2018 Recreation Programs, including Zentangle, Mini Dragons Kung Fu, Kung Fu Leaders, Teen Aerial Yoga and Ukulele with Rivertown Music.
Nyack Community Garden
The Nyack Community Garden is a community-based, nonprofit organization that provides residents of the Nyack School District with an opportunity to grow vegetables and flowers in a safe, friendly environment. It is accepting applications for new gardeners until Feb 23, 2018. New gardeners are encouraged to mail in completed applications as soon as possible, as priority on the waiting list for plots is determined by the dates of postmarks on the completed applications. After the 2/23 deadline, new members can send in applications to join the waiting list. Village of Upper Nyack

February 19, 2018 Public Input Session #2
The next public input session of Upper Nyack’s Comprehensive Plan Update process will be held Mon Feb 19 from 7-9p. The session will take place at the Upper Nyack Village Hall (328 N Broadway). The topics for the evening will be Climate Change Planning and Land Use & Development.
You can also have your voice heard by filling out a “My Vision for Upper Nyack” form. Print and drop off at the Village Hall or email your answers to CompPlanReview@uppernyack-ny.us.

Town of Clarkstown

The Clarkstown Town Council is extending the property tax exemption for veterans who served during the Cold War. The initial Cold War Veteran tax exemption law contained a ten year sunset provision, which was about to expire. A new state law empowered municipalities to extend the tax exemption indefinitely.
All active duty Cold War Veterans will now receive a permanent property tax reduction. To qualify, a veteran must have served on active duty for a minimum of 365 days between September 2, 1945 and December 26, 1991 and have been honorably discharged. For more information or to obtain an application, veterans can contact Clarktown’s Assessor’s Office at 845-639-2031. The deadline to submit applications for tax exemptions is March 1.

FREE Flu Shots

This year’s flu season is the most serious in more than a decade. If you or your children still haven’t gotten your flu shots, there are two more opportunities this week to get FREE flu shots.

  • Age 19 and over – Tues Feb 20 from 4-6p, Martin Luther King Center, 110 Bethune Boulevard, Spring Valley.
  • Age 6 months and over – Thurs Feb 22 from 4-7p, Crystal Run Facility, 2 Centerock Road, West Nyack.

Annual Joint Community 2018-2019 New York State Budget Forum

NYS Senator David Carlucci and Assembly members Ellen Jaffee and Ken Zebrowski invite you to the Annual Joint Community Budget Forum regarding the proposed 2018-2019 New York State Budget on Wednesday, February 21, 2018, from 2-4p, at Orangetown Hall – Courtroom 1 (26 W Orangeburg Rd, Orangeburg).

ML by Maria Luisa Scholarship

The application for the 2018 ML by Maria Luisa Scholarship program is now available to graduating female students in Rockland County. The ML by Maria Luisa Scholarship recognizes Rockland County high school female seniors who, through their actions or beliefs, embrace the principals of ML by Maria Luisa: civic and community involvement, commitment to social justice, social equality, and environment/eco-friendly lifestyles.
This year, two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded: one to a promising woman who is a senior attending a private or public Rockland County high school (must be a Rockland County resident), and one to a promising woman who is a senior attending Nyack High School. The scholarship will assist with costs in attending a college of the students’ choice.

New York State Thruway Authority Cashless Tolling Amnesty Program

The Thruway Authority is offering this amnesty program to Tolls By Mail customers with passenger vehicles who have open violations issued between April 24, 2016 through Jan 31, 2018. These customers include those who were already referred to a collection agency or have had their registration suspended. Customers must pay their entire outstanding toll balance by Feb 26, 2018 in order to receive amnesty on open violations.
