Nyack Weekender: Shop, Sing & Wear Ugly Sweaters

sing we enchantedSeasonal sounds abound this weekend, including victorian carols, gypsy jazz, Klezmer music and sing-a-longs, too.  For the procrastinators, there’s still time to find or make a unique gift for a special someone on your list.  For those looking to give back, there’s a coat drive or a benefit concert.

Friday

  • It’s the last week to find a unique gift for that special somone at the Affordable Art & Pottery Sale. Items include: functional ceramics, original 2-D & 3-D art, ceramics, jewelry and a collection of ceramics from the estate of Rosemary Aiello, a beloved RoCA teacher. Every day through December 21, 11a-4p, Rockland Center for the Arts, 27 S Greenbush Rd, West Nyack.
  • The Carnegie Concert Series presents Sing We Enchanted, a joyous, rollicking program of English carols and other European holiday favorites. The program includes rousing 18th and 19th century carols that were typically performed at holiday feasts, Christmas festivals, and lively pageants, as well as beloved carols from the church tradition. A festive reception follows the concert. 7:30p, Nyack Library, 59 S Broadway, Nyack.
  • If you’re tired of the same old versions of your Christmas favorites, head to the Union Arts Center for Gypsy Jazz Christmas as Doug Munro, Howie Bujese, Michael Goetz and Vinny Raniolo perform the swingingest Gypsy jazz versions with brand new, reworked arrangements. 8p, 2 Union St, Sparkill.
  • It’s time to wear those ugly holiday sweaters that have been hiding at the back of your closet to an Ugly Sweater Party with live music by Boxing the Needle. Grab your friends and enjoy some holiday cheer and delicious Peruvian cuisine. 9p, Maura’s Kitchen, 81-83 S Broadway, Nyack

Saturday

  • Create a beautiful winter holiday painting for a gift or a memorable keepsake while enjoying a delicious breakfast at a Holiday Paint and Chew Party. No previous painting experience required. 10:30a, Nyack Center, 58 Depew Ave, Nyack.
  • Shop local and support local artists at the same time at the Artist Open Studio at the Garner Arts Center. Visit several studio artists and pick up some unique holiday finds. 12-4p, Buildings 18 & 24, 55 W Railroad Ave, Garnerville.
  • Exercise those vocal chords and join in the singing at the Nyack Community Chorus Winter Concert under the direction of Dru Pluhowski. Don’t miss this inspiring and truly splendid concert to benefit Nyack’s Soup Angels. 4p, First Reformed Church, 18 S Broadway, Nyack.
  • For a Hanukkah treat, world-class clarinetist, Alexander Fiterstein, brings his Alexander Fiterstein Clarinet Trio to Nyack performing a delightful mix of classical and Klezmer music. 7:30p, The Reform Temple of Rockland, 330 N Highland Ave, Upper Nyack.

Sunday

  • Clean out those closets and bring your unwanted coats (sweaters, scarves, gloves and mittens, too.) to the Nyack Homeless Project’s Coat Drive. Bring new or gently worn coats of any size, shape, color or style. Coats will be distributed that day to those in need and then further distributed by the Nyack Homeless Project. Easy drop off outside, just pop the trunk or stop in for a photo op for kids and pets with someone wearing a RED suit. 11a-4p, 79 Main St, Nyack.
  • Blank-Fest 2017 is 12 hours of great music at Nyack’s Hudson House for a good cause. From noon to midnight, the event showcases a dozen acts of local, NYC-based, indie and major label performers, with a surprise guest that will leave you Shocked. A suggested donation of one blanket in any condition, is the cost of admission, a small price to pay for 12 hours of name-brand rock ‘n roll. 134 Main St, Nyack.
  • Hear the jazz stars of tomorrow as the Rockland County Youth Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Peter Furlan, perform at Maureen’s Jazz Cellar. 3p, 2 N Broadway, Nyack.
