Nyack Weekender: Arts, Science and a Street Fair, too

It’s a First Friday for the Arts and Science in and near Nyack. The Nyack Art Collective turns shops and streets into galleries and performance venues downtown on Friday night. On Saturday, engage your inner science geek at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory Open House and the Children’s Space & Astronomy Fair. Get into the act with shows at Antrim Playhouse, Elmwood, Shades Repertory and Penguin Rep. There’s also two doses of Presidential politics to sample, live music and the Nyack Street Fair on Sunday.

Friday

  • It’s the First Friday of October and Nyack’s monthly one-night downtown arts festival begins at the Gazebo at Cedar and Main with live music by Sam Bandes and Garrett at 6p. Utut a group show at Casa del Sol at 8p, 104 Main St, to see a themed exhibit titled Pencil as the artists keep it simple with graphite. Presented by the Nyack Art Collective at various venues throughout downtown from 6-8p.
  • Reception for Linda Pearlman Karlsburg, the First Friday Artist of the Month from 6-7p followed by an Art Talk with Michele Donnelly, Curatorial Fellow at the Whitney Museum of American Art, from 7-8p at Edward Hopper House Art Center, 82 N Broadway, Nyack.
  • Ted Rosenthal Trio performs Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue, as well as other jazz classics and originals. Light refreshments and beverages to be served. Presented by Rockland County Jazz & Blues Society. 8p at Union Arts Center, 2 Union St, Sparkill.ted
  • The Duane Eubanks Quartet, featuring the award-winning jazz trumpeter, performs at 8 & 9:30p at Maureen’s Jazz Cellar, 2 N Broadway, Nyack.
  • Antrim Playhouse presents the 1940s murder mystery musical A Shot in the Dark. Fri & Sat at 8p, Sun at 2p. Antrim Playhouse, 15 Spook Rock Rd, Wesley Hills.
  • Shades Repertory Theater puts on The Movable Feast, a play about a close knit Italian family in Queens whose restaurant is in jeopardy of shutting down. Fri & Sat at 8p at Shades Repertory Theater Company, 64 New Main St, Haverstraw.
  • Penguin Rep Theatre stages Daniel’s Husband, a play about an ideal couple, albeit Mitchell does not believe in marriage and Daniel does. Fri at 2 & 8p, Sat at 4 & 8p, Sun at 2p. at Penguin Rep Theatre, 7 Cricketown Rd, Stony Point.
  • A swinging ‘60s bachelor is happily engaged to three gorgeous stewardesses but he runs into turbulence when all three of his fiancées arrive in town simultaneously. Boeing Boeing, Fri & Sat at 8p, Sun at 2p. Elmwood Community Playhouse, 10 Park St, Nyack.
  • Check out Sculpture in the Garden, featuring the work of James Tyler and Santi-Hitorangi. Exhibit on display Wed – Sun, 12 -5p, through Oct 23. Edward Hopper House, 82 N Broadway, Nyack.

Saturday 

  • Young and old are invited to get their hands dirty alongside scientists at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory Open House. Tour a lab, participate in hands-on earth science demonstrations, and learn from world-renowned researchers about their latest discoveries. 10a – 4p at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, 61 Rte 9W, Palisades.
  • The Annual Pearl River Day features a full day of family fun including pumpkin painting, inflatables, live music, food and beer gardens. 11a – 6p in downtown Pearl River.
  • The Children’s Space & Astronomy Fair highlights exciting activities with hands on demonstrations, simulated space missions, live planetarium shows and crafts. 11a – 3p at The Challenger Center, 225 Rte 59, Suffern.
  • Enjoy Anna Veleva’s A Taste of Bulgaria, an evening of arias, songs and classical piano selections, paired with delicacies highlighting 2016-10-08Bulgarian cuisine. 7 – 9p at Union Arts Center, 2 Union St, Sparkill.
  • Stew Cutler blends jazz, soul and blues for a unique sound. 9p at Sixty 5 On Main, 65 Main St, Nyack.
  • It’s a little bit of Germany right here in Rockland County. 2016 Oktoberfest serves up German food and beer, entertainment and craft vendors. Every weekend through Oct. 12. 6p, Anthony Wayne Recreation Area, Palisades Interstate Parkway, Bear Mountain.
  • The Historical Society of Nyack hosts Van Houten’s Landing Historic Neighborhood exhibit. Weekly on Sat from 1-4p at 50 Piermont Ave, Nyack.

Sunday

  • Nyack’s Famous Street Fair, sponsored by the Arts, Crafts and Antiques Dealers Association (ACADA), brings vendors offering fine crafts, jewelry and art. Don’t miss the live music by Ritchie G, food and kids’ entertainment. 10a-5p, downtown Nyack.
  • Opening Reception for In Form: Contemporary Ceramics, on display through Nov 30. 1 – 4p at Rockland Center for the Arts, 27 S Greenbush Rd, West Nyack.
  • Opening Reception for Restoration showcasing the work of twelve accomplished local photographers, painters and sculptors from 2 – 5p at Bell-ans Center of Creative Arts, 103 South Greenbush Rd, Orangeburg.

Tuesday

Attend a John Scott Armchair Walking Tour covering the history of the Nyack Boat Club, an organization serving recreational boaters for 107 years, from home-made motor boats and a house built on stilts to the premier yacht racing club on the Hudson River! 2p at Valley Cottage Library, 110 Rt 303, Valley Cottage. 7p on Thurs at Nyack Library, 59 S Broadway.

Thursday

A screening of Piermont’s Factory Days, a Piermont Historical Society’s film on life in Piermont before the condominiums. 7:30p at Piermont Village Hall, 478 Piermont Ave.
