Congresswoman Nite Lowey meets with representatives from Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic on July 13

Hundreds of women’s health advocates from across the country traveled to Washington DC in July to show their support for reproductive health and justice. Joining them were area students, part of a Planned Parenthood-led trip during which the group met with Representative Nita Lowey (D-17) to thank her for her continued support of Planned Parenthood, women and their families.

“As one of the leading women’s health care providers in the nation, Planned Parenthood is one of the best resources to help inform the public about the benefits ACA and we couldn’t be more excited to be working with Representative Lowey,” said Tiffany Card, a Nyack resident and the director of public affairs and communications at Planned Parenthood Mid-Hudson Valley.

“Congresswoman Lowey has been a fierce advocate for reproductive health my whole life,” said Samantha Lifson, a White Plains constituent and the Community & Online Organizing Coordinator for Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic (PPHP).  “In the face of ongoing attacks on women’s rights, it’s so encouraging to have someone on our side representing us. And the students we work with recognize this as well – very few students from other parts of the country had such a positive visit with their congress member,” she said.

The delegation, which included students from Student at SUNY Stonybrook, spoke with the congresswoman about the October 1, 2013 launch of the health insurance enrollment portion of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).  Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic will be working with Lowey to educate constituents on the new benefits and opportunities of the ACA. Planned Parenthood is launching “Get Ready to Get Covered,” a national awareness and education campaign that will connect eligible people with resources and the new health insurance plan.

“I am so grateful for all of their work to ensure that women in the Lower Hudson Valley have access to the health care services they need,” Lowey said.
