Nyack, Nov 10 — In the last two weeks, we’ve had a super storm and a nor’easter as bookends to a Presidential Election. The forecast for this weekend calls for fair skies, warm weather and no campaign ads for the first time in months. It’s a good time to get outside, clean up the yard, get some federal assistance, as well as donate to causes to help others who are still hurting from the hurricane.
- FEMA is opening a Disaster Recovery Center in Rockland County on Sat Nov 10 2nd Floor Community Room at Provident Bank Park, 1 Provident Bank Park Drive Pomona, NY. Opening day hours are 1-8p. Starting on Sunday, the center will be open from 8a-8p seven days a week until further notice. “Residents and business owners should not hesitate to request help with registering for disaster assistance, filing insurance claims, or checking the status of an existing claim,” says Rockland County Executive Scott Vanderhoef. To file a claim, you will need to provide your address, the names of people living in your household, a description of your disaster damages, insurance information, your Social Security number and a phone number and address where you can be reached. Residents can also register by calling FEMA at (1-800-621-FEMA) or visiting DisasterAssistance.gov.
- Remember Halloween 2012? Probably not; it was a scary time for the adults as well as the kids with downed power lines, blocked streets and no electricity. On Saturday Nyack’s merchant and civic organizations will restage the Halloween That Never Was from 2-5p in downtown Nyack. Boo Sandy, aka Trick Or Treat Take 2, takes place on Main Street between Franklin and Broadway.
- On Tuesday NYS Senator David Carlucci cleaned up in the polls, winning a second two year term in Albany. On Sat morning, he plans to lead community volunteers to clean up a stretch of Route 304 in Congers. Meet at Dr Davies Farm stand at 11a if you’d clean to have some clean(up) fun.
- High School Select Chorus Sings For A Supper on Monday: Soup Angels, Nyack’s Soup kitchen, has been serving lots of extra mouths during this time where so many are in need. The non-profit invites the community to hear the Nyack High School Advanced Chorus in a special performance to benefit Soup Angels. Mon night at 7p at the First Reformed Church at 18 S. Broadway in Nyack.
- People to People — Rockland County’s Food Pantry — will be collecting non-perishable foods to stock their shelves at Nyack’s Boo Sandy community event on Sat afternoon. Cash donations are also accepted. Pantry hours are M-F 9:30a-4:30p open late on Thursdays until until 6:30p. Donations are accepted anytime at PeopleToPeopleInc.org.
- A local artist has released an EP to benefit victims and property damage in Piermont & Nyack from Hurricane Sandy. Hudson Valley native, Jase Blankfort, songwriter, producer and frontman of GLINT, released Rivertown Relief Effort – Benefit EP on iTunes. Blankfort says 100% of the proceeds will be delivered to the mayors of Piermont and Nyack.
