Henry Hudson’s 1609 Incident at Indian Point

Algonquin scholar and author Evan Pritchard will speak about “Henry Hudson and the incident at Indian Point”  when the Nyack Library’s Quadricentennial lecture series continues on Friday June 5.  Prichard will also discuss the local aspects of Native American history.

Evan Pritchard is working on his upcoming book Great Floating Bird, (alternate title ‘€œHenry Hudson and the Algonquins of New York’€) which tells the dramatic story of Henry Hudson’s journey of 1609 from a Native American perspective. This work of scholarship and  imagination will change the way readers see this highly significant encounter between the ‘€œNew’€ world and the ‘€œOld,’€ which occurred four hundred years ago. Most of what is known about the journey of the Half Moon (and the Native Americans they were trading with) comes to us through the ship’s log, written by the cryptic Robert Juet. Pritchard uses investigative techniques to reconstruct the movements of the Half Moon and to attempt to understand why this potentially peaceful encounter between two contrasting cultures ended in violence. Pritchard‘s interpretations provide us with surprising insights about Henry Hudson as well.

Evan Pritchard, of Mi’kmaq and Celtic-American descent, is the author of many critically acclaimed books including Native New Yorkers, (2nd edition Council Oak)  No Word for Time (3rd edition Council Oak), and Native American Stories of the Sacred (2nd edition Skylight Paths). He is currently adjunct professor of Native American Studies at Pace University (Pleasantville) and Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY.(starting 2009) He also teaches writing in the English department at Poughkeepsie’s Marist College, and World Religion at Pace University. Pritchard lectures frequently around the Eastern United States and in Canada where he has been working with elder William Commanda for many years. Pritchard is the director of the Center for Algonquin Culture, in Pine Hill, NY.  He recently lectured at the American Museum of Natural History.
