Mother’s Day, The Nyack Way

by Halle Goodman-Weinbaum
Mother’s Day is just around the corner (eight days away). For all of you last minute gifters, here are a few Nyack based Mother’s Day gift ideas that would make any mom feel appreciated.

1) Rejuvenating Yoga

Birchwood Center yoga

A bit of peace and relaxation wouldn’t be amiss in anyone’s life, especially a busy mom’s. There are several yoga studies in Nyack that offer gift certificates for a variety of classes. In particular, Nyack Yoga offers aerial yoga (yoga on hammocks hanging from the ceiling) and buti yoga (a mixture of yoga, tribal dance, and plyometrics). Other yoga centers include Birchwood Yoga and Fire Shaper.

2) Calming Massages

Not everyone’s idea of relaxation involves the moving and stretching of muscles in ways they never knew could those muscles could be manipulated. Luckily, there are a variety of places in Nyack where moms can relieve stress and tension–and be pampered while they’re at it. At Nyack Massage, 30-, 60-, or 90-minute sessions can be purchased for the mother in your life. In addition to yoga, the Birchwood Center has three massage rooms where they conduct Swedish massages, pregnancy massages, sports massages, and more. Gift cards can be issued for a customizable amount of money.

3) Yummy Desserts

For the mom with a sweet tooth, the Jolirose Bake Shop offers a wide assortment of cupcakes and other baked goods. While I’m sure that any sweet treat would be well received, they also are offering special order cupcakes for Mother’s Day that look like flowers. The chocolate cupcakes with buttercream frosting are my personal favorite; the frosting is just so sweet.

4) Stunning Jewelry

Didier Dumas

When stepping into Iriniri, you may be taken aback by the sheer amount of colorful decorations, clocks, and artwork hanging from the ceiling and affixed to walls. While they have beautiful decor, their jewelry is unique and consists of pieces in a variety of styles. If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind necklace or handcrafted earrings, this is the place to go.

5) Engaging Activities

Time spent together is priceless. A hike up Hook Mountain with a picnic lunch of quiches, sandwiches, and salads from Patisserie Didier Dumas could be invigorating for a woman that loves the outdoors.(Author’s note: French pastries are not the most portable, but they sure are tasty.) For a more artsy mom, pay a visit to the Hopper House to see the current exhibit: Rock, Paper, Scissors. The exhibit has works by Suzanna Frosch, Polly King, and John Rosis made of collage and layering of materials.
