Nyack Weekender: A Visit To Oz, The Odd Couple and Septemberfest (Oh my!)

Celebrate September and Back To School week with a drive up movie and a Nyack Street Fair. The Friday night free outdoor feature is The Wizard of Oz. There is a theater opening, a WWI exhibit opening and three art opening receptions. Need more diversions? Do the downward dog at the Palisades Center or sing some Stevie Wonder at a popup chorus. To get you through the week, the Nell Robinson and Jim Nunally band will bring their joyful music infused with folk, bluegrass, Americana, roots, swing, jazz and the blues to the Turning Point Cafe on Thursday.

Friday

  • “We’re off to see the wizard…and it’s wonderful because it’s free and outdoors!” Bring the whole family to the Artopee Way Drive-In (AKA Artopee Way Municipal Parking Lot) for a screening of the 1939 classic, The Wizard of Oz. It won Oscars for original score and best song (Somewhere Over the Rainbow). See it outdoors and under the stars. Bring your car or a lawn chair. 7:40p, Artopee Way Municipal Parking Lot, Nyack.
  • J.P. McDade of Comedy Central is headlining a standup comedy show that’s guaranteed to make you laugh at The Hudson House. 8p, 134 Main St, Nyack.
  • The Elmwood Playhouse presents, The Odd Couple, a comedy about two divorced friends, Felix Ungar and Oscar Madison, who try to live together despite ideas of housekeeping and lifestyle that are as different as night and day. Fri & Sat at 8p, Sun at 2p, 10 Park St, Nyack. Runs through October 7.

Saturday

  • This week Bike Nyack rides in “reverse” to Englewood. On the way back to Nyack, there’s an optional side trip up old 9W to checkout the hawks over the Hudson at the PIP Stateline rest area. Meetup in Memorial Park at 8:30a at the corner of Piermont & Depew Aves.
  • If you are a WWI history buff, don’t miss the opening reception for the Historical Society of the Nyacks’ Autumn Exhibition, Nyack and World War I, to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the United States’ entry into the Great War in 1917. 1-4p, Depew House, 50 Piermont Ave, Nyack. The exhibition is open every Saturday from 1-4p through November. There is A companion exhibit is on display at the Nyack Library in the glass cases adjacent to the Carnegie-Farian room.
  • The Palisades Parks Conservancy and  the Rockland Conservatory of Music present an Afternoon of Music at Tallman Mountain State Park. Adam Falcon and Patricia Santos will perform their unique blues, funk, and soul music in the outdoor amphitheater. Bring blankets, chairs and a picnic and enjoy this free concert at the park. Parking fees may apply. 2-4p, North Rt 9W, Sparkill.

Sunday

  • It’s Nyack Street Fair Sunday: Enjoy the bright skies and cooler weather at the Septemberfest Street Fair. Browse the vendors, take the children to the Kid’s Zone, fill up on your favorite festival foods and take a break and listen to some music at the Gazebo. 10a-5p, Main St and Broadway, Nyack.
  • For the art lovers out there, visit three opening receptions in one place as Rockland Center for the Arts kicks off its fall season of exhibits to celebrate the Contemporary Artists of Rockland. 1-4p, 27 S Greenbush Rd, West Nyack.
    • The first opening reception is for The Poetics of Place, drawings by Nyack resident Bill Batson in Gallery One. These drawings are careful examinations and visual interpretations of our built and natural environment in Nyack. Each of these drawings creates a unique record that gives an insight into our history and who we are as a community. This exhibit runs through October 1.
    • The second opening reception is for Rockland Reverso, an assemblage of photographs by Laurie Peek, all taken in Rockland County. Peek’s photojournalistic work straddles the line between documentary and fine art, subtly transcending the ordinariness of its subject matter. The photographs are vibrant, fluid surfaces that animate the inanimate with gestural boldness. This exhibit runs through October 1.
    • The third opening reception is for the Contemporary Rockland Artists exhibition in the Emerson Gallery which celebrates the present vision of the teaching artists at Rockland Center for the Arts (RoCA). This exhibit runs through September 24.

The Nell Robinson and Jim Nunally Band will perform an intimate night of music at the Turning Point Cafe, premiering new material as well as album favorites from the critically acclaimed Baby Let’s Take The Long Way Home. The all-star band features folk songwriter Nell Robinson and award-winning guitarist Jim Nunally as well as Jim Kerwin on bass fiddle and Jon Arkin on percussion. Tickets are $15. ($18 at the door.)
