The Villages: Memorial Day 2017

This Week in The Villages: Today is Memorial Day, commemorated by 11 events in and near Nyack that honor Americans who lost their lives while serving in the armed forces.
Because Monday is a holiday, trash pick up in the Village of Nyack will move to Tues May 30.
Nyack Hospital holds another informational meeting for the public on their proposed expansion on Tuesday; the annual African American Day Parade and Festival is Saturday; and Nyack Center’s Men’s Cooking event is Sunday.
Here’s a list of Memorial Day events across Rockland County:

  • Nyack – Parade begins at 10:45a at Main St and Franklin Ave and ends at Memorial Park. After the parade stay for a free concert in Memorial Park featuring Kick Start Charlie . Depew & Piermont Aves, Nyack.
  • New City – Parade starts at 10a on Main Street and ends at the Court House. Ceremony follows parade on court house steps.
  • Pearl River – The John H. Secor American Legion Post 329 of Pearl River hosts a parade starting at 10:15a from Niagara First Bank on North Middletown Road to Braunsdorf Park. Guest speakers include Noel Heffernan, a Marine veteran and commander of American Legion Post 329 in Pearl River, and Christopher Day, an Army veteran with distinguished combat service in Afghanistan.
  • Haverstraw – Ceremonies at 9a at Haverstraw Town Hall, One Rosman Road; 9:20a at Calico Hill Veteran’s Memorial, Railroad Avenue, Garnerville; 9:45a at Civil War Monument, Hudson Avenue, Haverstraw; 10:15a at World War II Monument, Clove Avenue, Haverstraw; 11a at World War I Monument, Mount Repose Cemetery; 11:30 p.m. watch fire ceremony at Bowline Point Park.
  • Stony Point – Service at 8:30a at Mt. Rest Cemetery on West Main Street. Parade kicks off at 9:30a on TenEyck Street and includes a service at the Spring Memorial. Parade ends on East Main Street at Town Hall where a memorial service will be held at at 10:30a
  • Suffern – The Fromm-Maxwell-DeBaun American Legion Post 859 hosts parade at 11a from Lot A, at Orange and Lafayette avenues, to the Soldiers Monument at Washington Avenue. A ceremony at the Soldiers Monument will follow parade.
  • Tappan – Commander Frank Allegro of the Carl A. Schelin American Legion Post 1271 holds the 70th annual Memorial Day parade at 11a The parade will start on Western Highway and proceed to the Tappan Reformed Church Green, where ceremonies will be held in honor of all fallen service members of the armed forces. Free hot dogs and soda will be served after the event.
  • Hillburn – Parade starts at 9a at the Ramapo Central School District buiding and will proceed to the World War I monument for the ceremony.
  • Sloatsburg – The village and the Sloatsburg American Legion Post 1643 sponsors a program and parade, starting at 10a, at the Veterans Memorial Park, adjacent to the Sloatsburg Municipal Building. Parade starts after the ceremony to the World War I Monument and concludes at the Sloatsburg Cemetery. All participants are then invited to the Pavilion at the Sloatsburg Community Fields for refreshments.
  • New Hempstead – The Rockland County Veterans’ Coordinating Council presents Memorial Day Ceremony at the Frederick Loecher Veterans Cemetery on Brick Church Road in New Hempstead.
  • Piermont – Parade starts at 10a in front of the VFW Post in Piermont. Watchfires for the troops who didn’t return from war will be lit at midnight May 29 at the end of the Piermont Pier and burn for 24 hours at four locations: Bowline Point Park in Haverstraw, Eugene Levy Memorial Park on Route 45 in Pomona, the top of Clausland Mountain in Orangeburg, and the east end of the Piermont Pier.

The Nyack Village Board proclaimed Sunday May 28, 2017 Reverend Willie Hairston Day in the Village of Nyack. Rev. Hairston and his wife are celebrating 27 years of ministry and service to the village in their role as Pastor and First Lady at Pilgrim Baptist Church.

Nyack Hospital Hosts Tues Community Forum on its Construction Project

Representatives from Nyack Hospital will hold a public informational meeting about the Hospital’s Care Transformation Project on Tuesday, May 30 at the Village Hall in Nyack. The meeting begins at 7p and will include an update on the project as well as a question and answer session.
Nyack Hospital’s Care Transformation Project includes the construction of a two-story addition which will double the size of the existing emergency department and add a new medical village. The construction will also incorporate the renovation and reconfiguration of existing space which includes the current Emergency Department, hospital lobby and adjacent corridors. Construction will begin in the next couple of months and is expected to be completed in 2018.

Nyack Center is Looking for a Few Good Men (Chefs)

On Sunday, June 4 from 5-7p join other men in cooking up a great time of food and fellowship for the Nyack Center. All proceeds go directly into the Nyack Center’s programs to assist children and families in need. Men Cooking is one of the most popular events of the year and attracts over 200 guests.
If you would like to participate, send an email to Dave Prouty, prepare a favorite dish at home that would serve about 20 people, arrive at Nyack Center by 4p on Sunday, June 4 to set up and get ready, bring sternos and trays or warming pads and an extension cord if your dish needs to be kept warm, and a serving spoon. Everything else is provided. There will be prizes for best main course, best appetizer, best dessert, best children’s dish and best side dish. You will also be joined by Celebrity Chefs from local food hotspots. There will be live auction items as well.
