Nyack Village Board Meeting –2/23/17

by Don Hammond
Here are a few of the updates from the meeting:

  • Nyack is considering initiating an “Adopt a Sign” program which is operated by NYS and allows for an organization or company to sponsor a sign and be responsible for the repair and maintenance.   The sign under consideration is at the entrance for Nyack near the Route 59 Thruway underpass.
  • In order to manage the monthly bulk pickup policy, Village Administrator Jim Politi is exploring the possibility of deputizing DPW workers as code enforcement officers specifically for this policy.

  • The Nyack Park Conservancy news:
    • New benches for Memorial Park: For their next project, the group is researching sturdier replacements for the current benches.
    • Look for a “pop up” playground over the Mother’s Day weekend.  The idea is focused on child directed play. The activities will be in Memorial Park and will be managed by volunteers. Learn more about this concept at PopUpAdventurePlay.org or FreeRangePlayGround.org.

  • Nyack Marina fees will remain the same in 2017 as they were last year: $75 per linear foot with residents receiving a $25 discount. That means a village resident with a 20-foot boat would pay $50 * 20 ft = $1,000 for a slip for the season.
  • The village sustainability coordinator will be pursuing a $50,000 grant for tree trimming around the Nyack.
  • An additional $820,000 grant for the TAP (Transportation Alternatives Program) allows the village to complete the Broadway portion of the project.  This means sidewalks and updates will be made from Cedar Hill to Tallman Avenue. The project is scheduled for completion in 2018.
  • The Marina Committee was authorized to make recommendations to the Village Board.  Anyone interested in becoming a member of the committee should contact the Nyack Village Clerk Mary White.
  • A resolution to award a consulting contract for revising the Local Waterfront Revitalization Project was tabled.  Members of the public requested that the yet to be named LWRP committee review the proposals and recommend a consulting firm to the board.  There was concern that only two firms submitted bids for the project. The request for proposal was distributed through several professional planning associations and several planning firms expressed interest in the project.  Two submitted actual proposals and only one complied with the budget amount that was requested.
  • Art Walk is scheduled for June 16-18. The annual event where retail spaces are transformed into art spaces will include some interesting ways for people to express their hopes for the future.
  • The previously scheduled March 9 special meeting to review the TZ Vista proposal has been postponed.
  • Members of the Central Nyack Civic Association say traffic and parking are among their concerns regarding a proposed six-story Waldron Ave building that will include affordable and transitional housing units. The association says this type of project isn’t appropriate for this location and it will impact the quality of life on Waldron Ave — concerns echoed by the Nyack Village Board. However, a formal proposal and a zoning change request have not been submitted.
  • Former Nyack Police Officer Brian Lennon passed away on Feb 21. He was involved in the Brinks Robbery shoot out in 1981 and served on the Clarkstown Police force until his early retirement due to hearing loss from the 1981 event. The Nyack Village Board will consider a resolution recognizing his service to our community.
