Nyack Weekender: First Friday of 2017

It’s the First Friday of January and there’s a wintry mix of art, music and outdoor fun heading your way. The Nyack Art Collective hosts a group exhibit with live music and an origami demo. The music line-up includes the NY JazzHarmonic, funk, classic rock and classical piano. Embrace the chill with a 4-mile  run/walk to benefit The Nyack Hunger Coalition, or ice skate and or bird watch. The Nyack Weekender is brought to you by The Arts Council of Rockland.

First Friday

  • first fridayTime for Nyack’s monthly one-night downtown arts festival. The First Friday of January kicks off at Casa del Sol at 8p with a group exhibit and live music by Sam and Zoey Bandes. Presented by the Nyack Art Collective. 104 Main St, Nyack.
  • Nationally known origami expert and creator Benjamin Levy gives a First Friday Origami Demo. 7p at Edward Hopper House Art Center, 82 N Broadway, Nyack.
  • Enjoy Ragtime Classics with NY JazzHarmonic. Go back in time and experience the musical heyday of old New Orleans and old Chicago during the speakeasies of the 1920s & ’30s. 8p at Union Arts Center, 2 Union St, Sparkill.
  • Celebrate the life of Maureen Budway with Pittburgh’s finest musicians at Winter Moe Down. 8p at Maureen’s Jazz Cellar, 2 N Broadway, Nyack.
  • Space Carnival blends high-energy disco, funk and progressive rock into an interplanetary performance. 10p at Olive’s, 118 Main St, Nyack.
  • Skate at Bear Mountain Ice Rink. Adults $5, children (ages 4-11) $4. 2-3:30p. General skating: Fri from 8-9:30p, Sat & Sun from 10a-9:30p. Bear Mountain Ice Rink, Bear Mountain State Park, Palisades Interstate Parkway.

Saturday

  • Revive your New Year’s resolution with The Nyack Hunger Coalition’s Resolution Run. Take part in the 4-mile run, walk or stroll in Nyack to raise funds and awareness for 10 non-profits that address hunger and homelessness in our community. Enjoy music, hot beverages and treats post-run. Register online through Jan 6 and in person on Jan 7 from 7:30-8:50a. Grace Church, 130 First Ave, Nyack.
  • Snow what? Minnewaska State Park is offering free snow shoeing lessons. A Sam’s Point Ranger will show you how to adjust, wear and walk in snowshoes before you head out to your favorite trail. Rentals available for $5 per person; pre-register at (845) 647-7989. 11a at Sam’s Point Visitor Center, 400 Sam’s Point Rd, Cragsmoor.
  • Become a citizen scientist at Sam’s Point Preserve Feeder Watch. Learn about observing and identifying birds, then make a pine cone starter feeder for your own back yard. 10 – 11a & 1 – 2p at Sam’s Point Visitor Center, 400 Sam’s Point Rd, Cragsmoor.
  • Visit Torne Valley Vineyards for all-day wine tasting or choose from a selection of craft beers and live music by Kyle Hancharick and The Hip Replacements. Sat and Sun from 11a – 5:30p at Torne Valley Rd, Hillburn.
  • A special after hours showing of Après Vous, a film about an overly helpful waiter who goes out of the way to help a suicidal man reconcile with his girlfriend. 5p at Palisades Free Library, 9 Closter Rd, Palisades.
  • Bring them dancin’ shoes to Kick Start Charlie, an 8-piece rock band with a 3-piece horn section that plays songs from the 70’s through the 90’s. 8:30p at Sixty5 on Main, 65 Main St, Nyack.
  • Get down with Sophisticated Simpleton, a 5-piece fusion groove band that brings R & B, hip-hop and funk. 10p at Olive’s, 118 Main St, Nyack.

Sunday

  • The Historical Society of Rockland County presents Let It Snow: Holiday Exhibition that explores wintertime in Rockland. From the commercial impact of the ice-cutting industry to extreme weather and the adventure of outdoor winter activities, this exhibition includes film footage, photographs and art installations. Weekly on Sun, Wed, Thurs, Fri until Feb 26. Noon – 4p at HSRC Galleries, 20 Zukor Rd, New City.
  • Spend an enchanted evening at the Candlelight Tours of The Jacob Blauvelt House. Experience Dutch American holiday traditions of the 1830s with nineteenth century music and song and seasonal refreshments. Prepaid reservations required.   • The Nyack Farmers’ Market has gone undercover! From Thanksgiving until the end of March, you can still shop for fresh produce and meats, fish, honey, a variety of farm products inside The Nyack Center each Thurs from 8a-2p.  The Nyack Center is located at 58 Depew and S Broadway.
