Nyack Weekender: For Art’s Sake

This weekend marks the unofficial end of summer, but there’s no end to the art, music, theatre and recreational activities available in and near Nyack.  Our weekly Fri-Sun rundown of what to do and where and where to do it is brought to you by The Arts Council of Rockland.

Friday

  • art collectiveIt’s the First Friday of September and Nyack’s monthly one-night downtown arts festival begins at the Gazebo at Cedar and Main with a performance by Kimberly Hawkey at 5p. Head to Casa del Sol at 8p, 104 Main St, to see a themed exhibit titled Favorite Childhood Toy. Presented by the Nyack Art Collective at various venues throughout downtown from 6-8p.
  • Reception for the Hopper House Artist of the Month Trine Gaiever at 6p followed by ART21, Art in the Twenty-First Century preview screening of this Peabody Award-winning series at 7p at Edward Hopper House, 82 N Broadway, Nyack.
  • Analyst as Painter exhibits work by David Klugman, a psychiatric social worker and psychoanalyst. Fri & Sat from 7-9p at Woolworth Building 94 Main St, Nyack.
  • The Dancin’ Machine Band puts on a Disco Party with DJ Orlando spinning between sets. 8p at West Gate Inn, 26 Route 59, Nyack.
  • Penguin Rep Theatre presents the romantic comedy Dancing Lessons. Fri 2 & 8p, Sat at 4 & 8p, Sun at 2p Penguin Rep Theatre, 7 Crickettown Rd, Stony Point.

Saturday

  • Join an end of summer Bike Nyack Ride that’s shorter, slower and… “Closter.” This 25-mile ride loop includes a car-free and carefree spin through Tallman State Park a refueling stop in Closter (NJ) and a return on the Clarke Rail Trail. Meetup at 830a at Nyack Memorial Park, the corner of Depew & Piermont Aves.
  • earthOpening reception for EARTH Impermanence. Featuring installation artists, painters and metalsmiths, this exhibition explores what it means to endure in this age of climate change and social unrest. Exhibit runs thru Oct. 2-5p at Union Art Center, 2 Union Ave, Sparkill, Open gallery hours Wed, Sat, and Sun from 11a -4p.
  • Huge Multi-Family Moving Sale featuring indoor & outdoor furniture, gently used appliances, high-end cookware and lots more! (Raindate: Sun Sept 4th). 11a – 4p at 133 & 135 Highmount Ave, Upper Nyack.
  • The Historical Society of Nyack hosts Van Houten’s Landing Historic Neighborhood exhibit. Weekly on Sat from 1-4p at 50 Piermont Ave, Nyack.
  • Edward Hopper House features photographer David LaChapelle’s Gas Station Series. LaChapelle is renowned for his celebrity photographs, music videos and films. On display through Sept 11. 82 N Broadway, Nyack.

Sunday

  • russianThe Otrada Russian Festival includes authentic Russian fare and BBQ with music, dancing, entertainment, Russian Tea Room & desserts, and children’s activities. Noon – 5p at 385 S Pascack Rd, Chestnut Ridge.
  • Take a peek into the past at the Piermont Train Station Museum. Sponsored by the Piermont Historical Society. Free admission, Noon-3p. 50 Ash Street.

Next Week

Wednesday

Vintage cars roll into the Bear Mountain Car Cruise along with a DJ, bounce house and food. Every Wed through Sept. 5-9p at Bear Mountain State Park, Palisades Parkway or Route 9W N. 

Thursday

The Shops at Nanuet’s Summer Concert Series presents music by The Amish Outlaws. 6:30 – 8p at the Shops at Nanuet, 5101 Fashion Dr.
