Nyack Weekender: Curtain Call

This weekend, there’s no business like show business! Elmwood Playhouse stages A Time To Kill, Antrim Playhouse puts on The Man Who Came To Dinner and Nyack High School presents Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. On the big screen, JCC Rockland hosts the Reel Abilities Film Festival while Nyack Village Theatre shows State of Grace. To recognize Nyack’s brightest, the Nyack Center throws a Women of Vision and Leadership Brunch. Here’s your Fri-Sun list of what to do and where to do it, brought to you by The Arts Council of Rockland and the Union Arts Center.

Friday

• The River Skye Band plays original and pop cover tunes at 7p at Olive’s, 118 Main St, Nyack.
• A Time To Kill is a suspenseful courtroom drama infused with crisp humor while dealing with themes of racism, sexual violence and the legal system. Tickets here. Fri & Sat at 8p, Sun at 2p, Elmwood Community Playhouse, 10 Park St, Nyack.
• The Man Who Came To Dinner is a 1930’s comedy about an injured radio personality whose abrasive ways terrorize the well-to-do family that is caring for him. Fri & Sat at 8p, Sun at 2p, Antrim Playhouse, 15 Spook Rock Rd, Suffern.
• The comedy-musical Dirty Rotten Scoundrels centers around two competing con men living on the French Riviera. Fri & Sat at 8p, Nyack High School, 360 Christian Herald Rd, Nyack.

Saturday

• The Women of Vision and Leadership Brunch honors Vivian England, Jo Lore, and Nicole Saieva, and the Young Woman of Leadership and Vision Scholars. This year’s Honorary Woman of Leadership and Vision, Natalie Couch. Tickets here. 10a at The Nyack Center, 58 Depew Ave.
• The Historical Society of Rockland and the Town of Haverstraw present Dutchtown and Major Andre: Highlights of Haverstraw History which showcases the riverfront neighborhood called Dutchtown, highlighting the Hudson Valley’s Dutch origins in the 1600s. Exhibit runs Wed–Fri and Sun from 12-4p until May 15. Exhibit reception: 12-4p at HSRC History Center, 20 Zukor Rd, New City.
• Celebrate River River’s spring issue release at a reading and open mic. Bring your poetry, fiction, memoir excerpts to share. Limit of 5 minutes per reader. 7p at CILK 119/Cuppa Pulp Writers’ Space, 119 Main St. #2, Nanuet.
• Nyack Village Theatre screens State of Grace, a film that follows Terry Noonan (Sean Penn) as he is welcomed back into the fold of his Irish-American neighborhood in NYC. 8p at Nyack Village Theatre, 94 Main St, Nyack.
•  Where We Are Standing: Contemporary Women Artists from Iran. Three artists who grew up in Iran before moving to North America share a strong cultural identity and a common focus on issues of gender and displacement shaped by the complex political and social landscape of their homeland. Featuring the work of Golnar Adili, Roya Farassat, and Shabnam K. Ghazi. Exhibit runs through April 24.  Wed-Sun 12-6p at the  Hopper House Art Center, 82 N Broadway, Nyack.

Sunday

• JCC Rockland screens films that are part of Reel Abilities, the largest festival in the country dedicated to presenting award-winning films made by and about people with different disabilities – physical, developmental and psychological. On Sun at 1:30p: A Blind Hero: The Love of Otto Weidt, a docu-drama that tells of “unsung Schindler” Otto Weidt, who saved Jews from Nazi death camps. Weidt, who was blind, employed Jews with vision and hearing disabilities assigned to him from the Jewish Home for the Blind. On Mon at 7:30p: Stilts and Spokes, a film about Jay Cramer, a man who falls off a rock boulder while climbing and breaks his neck, leaving him wheelchair-bound. He goes on to become the winner of Los Angeles Funniest Comic competition. All films shown at JCC Rockland, 450 W Nyack Rd, West Nyack.

• Sunday Concert Young Masters Recital Series presents Nicholas King, classical pianist, performing Brahms, Chopin and Debussy. 1:30p at Valley Cottage Library, 110 NY-303.
• ArtsRock presents internationally-recognized pianist Frederic Chiu performing music by Claude Debussy and Gao Ping. Tickets here. 2p at Union Arts Center, 2 Union St., Sparkill.
• Stop by Nyack Business: Long Before the Malls at The Historical Society of the Nyacks Museum featuring photographs and memorabilia from local businesses in the Time Before The Malls. Open Sundays through May 29. 1p at Depew House, 50 Piermont Ave.
