Veterans Day is a federal holiday and is observed each year on November 11 to honor all those who have served in the U.S. armed forces.  It was formerly known as Armistice Day to commemorate the armistice signed between the Allies and Germany to end World War I which took effect at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

Many countries changed the name of the holiday just prior to or after World War II to honor all veterans.  A bill to expand Armistice Day to honor all veterans was passed by Congress in 1954 and it then became known as Veterans Day.  In 1971 it was moved to the fourth Monday in October in accordance with the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.  In 1978, it was moved back to November 11.  In France and Belgium, the holiday is still known as Armistice Day.  In the Commonwealth of Nations, including Canada, the holiday is now known as Remembrance Day.

The Nyack American Legion is holding a “Raise Our Roof” fundraiser on Veterans Day, Wednesday Nov 11 at 6:30p at Nyack’s La Fontana Restaurant, sponsored by Rand Realty. The veterans’ group needs to replace the roof on their building on Piermont Ave which overlooks Memorial Park.  For more information, call Anthony DelRegno, Vice Commander of American Legion Post 310, at (845) 358-7171.

Sight Unseen, a play by Donald Margulies, Sun at 2p

Donald Margulies is the acclaimed author of Time Stands Still, and Dinner with Friends among many others that M&M Productions has brought to you in the past.  The play centers on Brooklyn-born Jonathan Waxman who has become a very wealthy, critically acclaimed artist. Happily married, with a baby on the way, he travels to London for a retrospective of his work. While there, he impulsively decides to journey to the countryside to visit his former model and muse, Patricia, in the Norfolk farmhouse where she lives and works with her archeologist husband Nick, a man she married in order to remain in England when her student visa expired. The play unfolds exploring issues of identity, home, and the place of art in our society.  Registration is required.  Space is limited.
