Nyack Weekender: First Friday of August

It’s First Friday featuring French music, art and poetry readings in Nyack. The weekend also includes theatre on stage, a evening lantern walk through history, a community bike ride to North Joisey and a must see train stop where the train don’t stop no more in Piermont. Here’s your Fri-Sun rundown of what to do and where to do it.

Friday

It’s the First Friday of August and Nyack’s monthly one-night downtown arts festival includes a group show titled Sealife at Prohibition River and French music by Les Tappan Zigues and poetry by the Suffern Poets at the Main Street gazebo. Artist Marisol Diaz’s work can be seen at Casa del Sol and John F. Simon talks about Software Art and Edward Hopper at the Hopper House at 7p. Presented by the Nyack Art Collective at various venues throughout downtown from 6-8p.
A reading of Rockland County actress Judy Stadt‘s new autobiographical monologue, Hide & Seek, is on stage at Shades Repertory Theater. Fri & Sat at 8p, 64 New Main St, Haverstraw.
Bring your lawn chairs and blankets to see A Midsummer Night’s Dream by the Babbling Brook Players. Fri, Sat & Sun from 6:30-9:30p at Montebello Village Hall, 1 Montebello Road.
The Mystical Majesty Band, the “east coast’s greatest Beatles cover band,” performs at the Town of Orangetown Summer Concert Series. 7:45p, Veteran’s Memorial Park, Orangeburg.
Last weekend to see All In The Timing, a collection of clever and hilarious one-acts by David Ives. Fri & Sat at 8p, Sun at 2p. Elmwood Community Playhouse, 10 Park St, Nyack.

Saturday

This week the BikeNyack community bicycle ride goes to Hillsdale, NJ. Meet up at 8:30a at Memorial Park, corner of Depew and Piermont Aves, Nyack.
Sign up to volunteer with the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater cleanup at Pete & Toshi Seeger Riverfront Park in connection with American Rivers’ National River Cleanup day. Email Volcord@clearwater.org to sign up. 9a-1p, 1 Red Flynn Drive, Beacon.
The Banjo Rascals bring bluegrass to a fun outdoor concert! 2-4p at New City Library, 220 N. Main St.
Learn details of the Battle of Stony Point during an Evening Walking Lantern Tour. Walk through the original battleground at dusk with a costumed guide as the sounds of musket and cannon fire punctuate the gathering night and bring the story of the American victory to life. Sunday

Piermont had a prominent role in the American Revolution and in Woody Allen’s Purple Rose of Cairo, too. Learn more about the village’s contribution to American history and the movie business during Train Station Sundays. The exhibit, Piermont During WWII: Last Stop USA is open 12-3p at the Piermont Train Station, 50 Ash St.

Film in the Garden at the Edward Hopper Arts Center presents Maciste all’Inferno in conjunction with Rivertown Film. Internationally renowned local bandleader, composer, arranger & trumpeter Steven Bernstein leads his grammy-award nominated band SEXMOB in a performance of an original score. 7:30p at Edward Hopper House, 82 N. Broadway.

Tuesday

It’s the Crusty Gentlemen playing big barn burning bluegrass during the next-to-last-performance of Mostly Music in Memorial Park. Presented by Friends of the Nyacks. 7:30p at Piermont & Depew Aves, Nyack.

Wednesday

The Soul Mates bring their acoustic-electric four piece band to the Stony Point Summer Concert Series. 7p at River Front Park, Grassy Point Rd, Stony Point.

Thursday

The Ben Kono Group plays Music In The Garden at the Hopper House. Bring a lawn chair and a donation of $5 for great jazz in a comfortable setting. 7:30p, 82 North Broadway, Nyack.
The Nyack Film Festival brings four days of independent films from around the globe to the Nyack Village Theatre. Aug 13-16, 94 Main St.
