Nyack Weekender for Sept 26-28, 2014

Hot apple pieHere’s a run down of what to do and where to do it this weekend.

Friday

  • Union Arts Center hosts Spirit Dance, a night of yoga, musical performances and free-form dance. Jazz musician Steve Teti and DJ Marvl will provide the live music. From 7-10:30p at 2 Union St., Sparkill.
  • Jazz vocalist Alicia Crowe performs at Avida Wine Bar beginning at 8p. 159 Main St.
  • Prohibition River showcases acoustic musicians every Friday night in the Upstairs Lounge. This week’s featured artists are Ryan & Ryan of R&R Music School. No cover. 9p, 82 Main St.

Saturday

  • Immerse yourself in history at Colonial Day at the DeWint House in Tappan. Experience the past through guided tours and costumed reenactments. Noon until 5p.
  • Take a guided hike to Skunk Hollow, the site of a 19th century black settlement, followed by a jaunt to the Women’s Federation Monument and finishing on the Long Path. The three hour hike starts at 11:15a meeting at the Lamont-Doherty entrance, Rte 9W.
  • The Nyack Saturday Farmer’s Market features local farmers, florists,  food vendors, artists and more. From 8a-1p in the Main Street parking lot. Jesse Frayne entertains with acoustic folk music.
  • Family Fun Day at Germonds Park benefits the Rockland County Association for Learning Disabilities. Activities include relay races, bounce houses, face painting, sports, mini golf, music and more. 2p-dusk, 185 Germonds Road.
  • National Hunting and Fishing Day at Congers Memorial Park. Enjoy the great outdoors and learn about fishing, hunting, and archery. No fishing license needed to fish in the lake. 9a-3p.
  • Carnegie Concert Series, pianist Jason Stoll performs pieces from Rachmaninoff, Haydn, Schumann and others. 7:30p at Nyack Library, 59 S. Broadway.

Sunday

  • The Hook Mountain Challenge Kayak Race benefits the Nyack Homeless Project. Registration starts at 10a, the 12 mile race starts at 12n and the 6 mile race starts 12:30p. At Nyack Memorial Park.
  • Walking tour of downtown Nyack at 2p traces Nyack’s growth from a small river village to a major commercial and manufacturing center during the Gilded Age. Meet at the foot of Main Street by the river.  $5 per person, sponsored by the The Friends of the Nyacks.
  • There’ s an Eco-Friendly House Party on Sunday to support the Rockland Water Coalition in their fight against a proposed desalination plant in Haverstraw. David Amram, Tom Chapin and Jeremy Wall will perform live music. 3p at 23 South Dogwood Lane, Pomona.
  • Piermont’s 11th annual Apple Fest includes live entertainment, children’s rides, and refreshments. Donate your used prescription glasses to help the visually impaired. Sponsored by the Blauvelt Lions Club, 10a-5p at Flywheel Park, 554 Piermont Ave.
  • RoCA holds a special event called Living and Sustaining a Creative Life moderated by artist and book creator, Sharon Louden. Through a collection of essays written by 40 artists, open your eyes to the diversity of ways artists can thrive while navigating their own careers. RoCA is located at 27 Greenbush Road, West Nyack.

Next Week

Nyack Library will show the film “The Kiterunner” for its Tuesdays at Two film series. This film concludes September’s theme – movies made from banned books – honoring the national Banned Books Week.
