These Eagles Have Flown Their Coop

A pair of mature bald eagles moved into a nest in Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Park last month.

The park marked off the top of the mountain with rope and signed indicating a big fine if you entered and disturbed the eagles.  A viewing platform was build a good distance from the nest.

After taking pictures of the female sitting on the nest, I looked at the wonderful scenery of this riverfront hill surrounded on tree sides by the Hudson River.

On the upper level there is a lighthouse, the nest, a tent encampment, Revolutionary War museum and lots of nature. Driving in I saw a swami sitting on a nest in a pond, mate swimming, a great blue heron on the shoreline. and a northern flicker flew onto a tree.

Unfortunately, their eggs did not hatch so the eagles abandoned the nest.  They have been seen on the hill side. Hopefully, next year. we will have eagles mating in the nest and we can watch the babies mature from the platform.

The Stony Point Battlefield museum is open Wednesday thru Saturday 10:00a – 4:30p and noon to 4:30 on Sundays. Visit nyspark.com for more info or call 845 786 2521. The Rockland Audubon Society has a Spring Bird walk on Saturday, June 14 at 8a. The gate opens at 7:45a. All are welcome.
