Rockland County Executive Race: Closing Arguments

Rockland County voters will go to the polls on Tues Nov 5 from 6a-9p to choose their first new County Executive in 20 years. Here are closing arguments from the Democratic and Republican candidates, David Fried and Ed Day.

David Fried

A few days ago, State Senator David Carlucci and I stood together on the banks of the Hudson and marveled at the initial construction of the new Tappan Zee Bridge. I thought of the debating, the negotiations, and the heartache that got the project just to this point, and I’m certain that there will be more difficulties and disagreements as construction commences. However, we are finally making progress on a desperately needed infrastructure project, and this progress will be good for Rockland County in the long run.

DavidFried201212aI looked at the barges, cranes, and pilings and I thought of our campaign, and our vision for moving Rockland forward. As County Executive, I want to build bridges, too. I want us to put aside our differences and move our community forward, regardless of our political affiliation or ideology.

Animosity and blustering dominate today’s electoral landscape, but they’re toxic and have no place in public service. The recent federal government-shutdown and debt-ceiling crisis should be a lesson to us all just how fragile our future can become if we can’t endeavor to work together despite our differences. And a county like Rockland, with so much at stake, can’t afford divisiveness among its residents. More

Ed Day

Last year, I realized that if someone did not step up and take on the challenges Rockland was facing, my son would not be able to raise my grandson in the county we call home. Rockland County Legislator Edwin DayI decided that I needed to step up to the plate for all of our children and grandchildren here in Rockland.

I have substantial private and public sector leadership experience, with executive and budgetary responsibility. From serving as Lieutenant-Commander of Detectives in the NYPD and Chief of Detectives in the Baltimore Police Department to Corporate Director of Security at a major housing corporation, I know how to lead large organizations and how to lead in crisis. I have also served as a County Legislator since 2005, elected over the incumbent in a 3-1 Democrat district. My budgetary and executive experience in both the private and public sector more than qualifies me to lead such a large organization with such a complex budget – executive experience my opponent lacks. Similarly, I have the capability and experience to lead in crisis, be it financial, natural disaster, or otherwise – and Rockland is, simply put, at a true crisis point. More
